October is when the sales year starts to look a lot clearer.
You know which deals are moving. You know which ones have stalled. You have a better idea of where you will finish the year and, importantly, what could carry into 2027.
It is also a good time to take a proper look at your sales pipeline.
Because a pipeline full of opportunities does not necessarily mean you have a strong pipeline.
If half of those opportunities have not been contacted in weeks, have no clear next step or are unlikely to close this year, the number can be misleading.
Before the year gets away from you, here are seven things worth checking.
1. How Many Opportunities Are Actually Active?
Start with the basics.
Go through your open opportunities and ask:
- Has there been recent contact?
- Is there a genuine requirement?
- Is there a known decision-maker?
- Is there a realistic budget?
- Is there a clear next step?
If an opportunity has been sitting in the same stage for months with no activity, it may not really belong in your active pipeline.
A smaller pipeline with genuine opportunities is more useful than a large pipeline full of possibilities that are unlikely to happen.
2. Which Deals Can Realistically Close This Year?
With only a few months left, it is worth separating your opportunities by their likely timing.
Look at:
Likely to close this year
Deals with a clear requirement, budget, decision-maker and timeline.
Potentially moving into 2027
Good opportunities where the buying process will take longer.
Uncertain
Opportunities where there has been interest but little actual progress.
This gives sales and management a much more realistic view of the year-end position.
It also helps your team focus its time where it can have the biggest impact.
3. Are Your Opportunities Getting Stuck?
Look at how long opportunities are spending in each stage of your sales process.
If deals regularly get stuck at:
- Initial contact
- Qualification
- Proposal
- Negotiation
- Decision
there may be a problem worth investigating.
Perhaps proposals are taking too long to produce.
Maybe prospects are not getting followed up quickly enough.
Or perhaps your qualification process is allowing too many weak opportunities into the pipeline.
Your CRM should help you identify these bottlenecks rather than simply record them.
4. Does Every Opportunity Have a Next Step?
One of the simplest checks you can make is also one of the most useful.
Open your pipeline and ask:
What happens next for each opportunity?
A good next step might be:
- Discovery call
- Product demonstration
- Proposal review
- Technical meeting
- Follow-up call
- Decision meeting
If the next step is simply “follow up”, there may not be a clear sales plan behind the opportunity.
A well-managed CRM should make it easy for salespeople to see what needs to happen next and when.
5. Is Your Sales Data Actually Reliable?
Your sales pipeline is only useful if you trust the information inside it.
Check for:
- Duplicate contacts
- Old opportunities
- Missing values
- Incorrect sales stages
- Opportunities without owners
- Outdated close dates
- Incomplete customer information
Poor CRM data can lead to poor forecasting.
Therefore, cleaning up your pipeline before the end of the year can give management a much clearer starting point for 2027.
6. Can Management See the Same Picture as Sales?
This is where disconnected systems can cause real problems.
Sales may have one view of the pipeline.
Finance may have another view of expected revenue.
Management might be working from an Excel report created last month.
That makes forecasting difficult.
A connected CRM and ERP environment can bring sales activity, customer information, orders and financial data closer together.
Platforms such as Odoo, HubSpot and Microsoft Dynamics 365 can give businesses a more connected view of the customer journey and sales process.
7. Are You Learning From This Year’s Pipeline?
The pipeline should not only tell you what might happen.
It should help you understand why things are happening.
Look back at the year and ask:
- Where did your best leads come from?
- Which industries converted best?
- Which sales stages caused the most delays?
- How long does a typical deal take?
- Why are opportunities being lost?
- Which salespeople or teams are converting most effectively?
- How accurate were your forecasts?
This information can directly influence your sales strategy for 2027.
The goal is to use your CRM as a source of insight, not simply somewhere to store contact details.
Your Pipeline Should Help You Plan, Not Just Track Sales
A good sales pipeline gives you more than a list of potential customers.
It can help you understand:
What is likely to close?
What needs attention?
Where are deals getting stuck?
What revenue could be coming?
Where should your sales team focus?
That information becomes particularly valuable as you approach the end of the year.
Rather than starting January by trying to work out where everything stands, you can enter 2027 with a cleaner pipeline, clearer forecasts and a better understanding of where your opportunities are coming from.
Is Your CRM Doing Enough?
If your sales team still relies heavily on spreadsheets, email reminders and manually created reports, it may be worth looking at what your CRM could be doing for you.
Odoo, HubSpot and Microsoft Dynamics 365 can all support sales teams in different ways, from lead management and automation to forecasting, reporting and customer management.
The right choice depends on your business, your existing systems and how your sales process actually works.
At Target Integration, we help businesses review those processes and identify where better CRM, ERP, automation and reporting could improve the way they sell.
Get Your Pipeline Ready for 2027
You still have time to make a difference to this year’s numbers.
More importantly, you have time to make sure the problems you have experienced this year do not follow you into the next one.
Clean up the pipeline. Focus on the opportunities that matter. Understand what is working. Then use that information to plan for 2027.
If your CRM is not giving you that visibility, it may be time to look at what needs to change.
